Over the past 2 weeks I completed the Gateway section of on-board training. A class composed of 45 participants representing 10 different nations of crew for either vessel, remote workers for  national offices or individuals who work on the ISC campus here in Texas. The days were filled with various meaningful sessions and group discussions to equip each member in a community of faith in alignment with the Mercy ship values and mission. The Gateway program is essential for new long-term crew members, ensuring they are well-prepared for their roles through serving communities with dignity, compassion and excellence. Some components included: cross-cultural training, team building, leaderships development, personal and spiritual growth, and practical skills.

Through these activities a tight-knit community was created over shared experiences, faith and a common mission. I look forward to carrying forward these lasting friendships once onboard to encourage and support each other through all the trails.

This weekend several of our fellow trainees departed the ISC and headed to the Global Mercy, the sister ship of the Africa Mercy. While we celebrate their transition, eight of us remain to complete our field practice, as essential part of preparation before joining the Africa Mercy in Madagascar.

Watching our friends leave was a mix of emotions – joy, pride and a touch of sadness. We’ve shared countless laughs together while completing training sessions. As they step aboard the Global Mercy with their hearts ready to serve, they carry their training with them as well as the prayers and support of those of us still on the journey. We can’t wait to hear their stories of impact and transformation from their time in Sierra Leone.

To all my friends on the Global Mercy we are cheering you on!!

In the midst of training, we have also found time to explore some of Texas together. From tasting local BBQ, to visiting nearby towns, and antique shopping we embraced the adventure beyond the campus boundaries. Many evenings were filled with games, laughter and piñata parties. These moments remind us that community isn’t just about working together – it’s about living life together.
