It’s high time for another blog post. I’ve sat down several times intending to write, but somehow, time kept slipping away with the past month being a whirlwind of activity.
I recently returned from my PTO (Paid Time Off), which might sound a bit unusual in a volunteer role. Mercy Ships makes an intentional effort to care for its volunteers, allotting time off based on the length of each person’s commitment. So while I may not be “paid” in the traditional sense, this time is still recognized and valued and I was so thankful for the ability to travel back to Canada.

The days were packed with meaningful moments. I got to witness the wedding of a very dear friend, enjoy sleepovers with my nieces, game nights with family, and walks along the river. There were countless coffee dates each one filled with laughter, stories, and encouragement. The two weeks flew by far too quickly, and before I knew it, I was once again packing my bags and saying my goodbyes. Thank you to everyone who made those days so special. You filled my heart in ways I can’t fully express.

Coming back to Madagascar and stepping foot on the ship again felt like returning home. It was a quiet reassurance from God that this is exactly where I’m meant to be right now. From the moment I walked up the gangway, I was welcomed so warmly by the crew onboard. Their smiles, hugs, and genuine excitement to see me again made me feel deeply seen and valued. It was one of those moments where I was reminded just how much a part of this community I truly am.
The warm welcome from the day crew only confirmed it further. They greeted me with big smiles and open arms, and their joy when I handed them each a small gift, a badge reel for their ID cards. Watching them proudly replace their lanyards made my heart swell, and sometimes it’t the little things, that say the most.
While my role remains the same, the work has intensified. With our patient numbers climbing to around 200, nearly every bed being filled. The increase brings its share of logistical and emotional challenges. But amid the busy schedules and difficult decisions, we lean into grace and pray for wisdom each day.
Ultimately, our purpose hasn’t changed: we’re here to serve. We’re here to glorify God with the work of our hands, the love we show, and the compassion we offer. A reminder to keep us grounded, even in the busiest of days.
